A Response to Statement #2
The statement, "The ultimate goal in life is to live as pleasurably as possible," is a statement that I try to live by everyday. Recently I have experienced the death of my Grandmother. This has made me realize how short life really is. Why waste your valuable time worrying about getting the highest grades or making the most money if it makes you miserable along the way. You have a limited time on this planet so why not make the best of it? Obviously I still go to school and understand the importance of getting a good education, however, I do my best to not let school consume my life. You see people with a lot of money who are unhappy, but you also see the people who don't make as much money much happier people. This is because they people who don't make as much money do what they love for a job and aren't caught up in the rat race.

I'm not sure if the ultimate goal in life is to live as pleasurably as possible. But I do agree with your ideas that being happy is more valuable than having money or working for something that will bring success but not happiness. No matter how successful or rich someone is, unless they make great changes in the world, their life has been wasted on a fixation with power and wealth. I completely agree that money does not bring happiness and that living happily is more important than being wealthy. But it is also difficult to live for pleasure alone because with pleasure comes struggle and pain. Living solely for pleasure may also be seen as a waste of life, if one does not make any accomplishments and lives selfishly.
ReplyDeletePeople have the ablility to be happy no matter what their situation is so happiness is a great personal goal. It can be harder for some people to be happy than for others depending on their situation but optimism can always be present. I believe every situation has something positive that can come out of it even if it is hard to see it. For example, Bethany Hamilton (Soul Surfer) got her arm bitten off by a shark. Bad situation. When asked if she would go back and not go surfing that day, she said she would still do it because she was able to reach out to more people with one arm than she ever could with two arms. She was able to do what she loves and live happy and inspire others even after a tragic accident. There is always a positive to every negative.
